In the sports world, there's nothing more sad than a superstar who overstays his welcome and hangs on a bit too long. Then there are the rare sports heroes who walk out on top. Tony La Russa just won the World Series - one of three - and called it a career. Others who did ... Jim Brown, who lettered in both football and lacrosse at Syracuse, then went on to become the best running back in NFL history with the Cleveland Browns. John Elway, the star quarterback for the Denver Broncos, quit after winning back-to-back Super Bowls. Bill Walsh, the NFL head coach who invented the revolutionary "West Coast Offense", walked away after winning his third Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers. Bill Russell left basketball after he won his 11th NBA championship in 13 seasons. Rocky Marciano retired from boxing with a perfect record of 49-0.
Did I miss anybody? Anyone who should have hung it up earlier? Anybody who should retire right now - before it's too late?
