(from Mark Gruba over at News 8) - Designated Drivers of Rochester will offer free rides from downtown Rochester on New Year's Eve to anyone who feels like they've had too much to drink. The company, which has operated in Buffalo for the past four years, offers what it calls a no excuse solution to eliminating drinking and driving.  "You might be saving a life, you might be saving your own life," said designated driver Jed Tranquill.  Tranquill is a retired RTS bus driver and professional driving instructor. Designated Drivers of Rochester is a for-profit company that operates year-round.  The free rides home from downtown Rochester on New Year's Eve will be available between the hours of midnight and 2 a.m.  "When you call our service line we dispatch two uniformed drivers who come and pick you up and drive you home in the comfort of your car," said Designated Drivers of Rochester Promotions Director Kristin Lipp. Door to door service with your vehicle is what makes up the no excuse solution.  "A lot people that do want to get home safely, they don't want to leave their vehicle behind," said Lipp.  "There's a number of reasons people need their car in the morning, so we provide the no excuse solution."  To dispatch or reserve a driver, call (585) 880-0380.

Walking Away A Winner

Three Sports In the sports world, there's nothing more sad than a superstar who overstays his welcome and hangs on a bit too long. Then there are the rare sports heroes who walk out on top. Tony La Russa just won the World Series - one of three - and called it a career.  Others who did ... Jim Brown, who lettered in both football and lacrosse at Syracuse, then went on to become the best running back in NFL history with the Cleveland Browns. John Elway, the star quarterback for the Denver Broncos, quit after winning back-to-back Super Bowls. Bill Walsh, the NFL head coach who invented the revolutionary "West Coast Offense", walked away after winning his third Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers.  Bill Russell left basketball after he won his 11th NBA championship in 13 seasons. Rocky Marciano retired from boxing with a perfect record of 49-0.

Did I miss anybody?  Anyone who should have hung it up earlier?  Anybody who should retire right now - before it's too late?
